CEDAR POINT CHAUSSEE
Leading up to 2019, powerful Lake Erie wave action in combination with above-average water levels created a severe access issue on the Chaussee. Frequent road closures and roadway damage were becoming the norm as severe weather wrecked this insufficently protected strip of land.
In 2019, our crews worked with Cedar Point to construct an Armor Rock Revetment that covered approximately 4,200 linear feet of shoreline along the chaussee. We utilized 23,700 tons of Rock Armor to complete the project.
With the new revetment constructed, road closures are now a thing of the past, and homeowners on the Chaussee can rest easy knowing their property is safe from coastal erosion, severe weather, and road access issues.
RESIDENTIAL EROSION CONTROL
One erosion control project we completed involved 6 adjoining homeowners in Eastlake who were rapidly losing precious lakefront acreage at an alarming rate. We completed this multi-residence project in just under 3 weeks, helping to make this string of backyards safe and enjoyable once again.
We recently completed a slightly different erosion control project in partnership with Crystal Cove Condos in Vermilion. To complete this project we constructed an armor stone revetment, improved existing shoreline protection including an off-shore breakwall, and added soil to badly eroded areas in the cove. We put the finishing touches on this project by grading the shoreline.
As always, we used our specially-designed mats to move our heavy earthmoving equipment across the property, reducing and eliminating damage to the lawn and underground utilities.

Which Shoreline Erosion Control Method is Best?
After decades of completing wide-ranging Shoreline Erosion Control projects, we have found that Armor Rock Revetments are the one of the best ways to eliminate erosion on the lakefront.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources use and recommend this method of erosion control exclusively.
In addition to revetments, we also offer services to install breakwalls and off-shore breakwaters to enhance shorelines and provide additional protection.
What Makes a Revetment Effective?
A revetment consists of Army Corps-Approved Limestone, Fabric, Armor Rock, and Concrete Materials.
Revetments dissipate wave energy as the waves crash against the Lake Erie Shoreline. If the shoreline isn’t protected, or is inadequately protected, the force of incoming waves erodes fragile soil.
This goes for shelf-ice as well. In winter, waves push frozen blocks of ice called shelf-ice against the coast, exacerbating the rate of erosion.
How Do You Install a Revetment?
To install a revetment, we start by laying down specialized fabric to protect the soil at the shoreline.
You can think of the fabric we lay down as a kind of seal that protects the soil underneath while also holding the rock and concrete in place. The fabric keeps everything in place and prevents materials from migrating.
We then cover the fabric with an aggregate of concrete and 3-6-ton army corps-approved limestone rocks, called toe rock.
Revetments absorb the energy of the waves, dissipating their destructive power and protecting your beach for years to come. They can withstand huge waves and ice pushes.
What Can I Expect for my Erosion Repair Project?

How Long Does Revetment Construction Take?
We would love to give an exact time-frame for your erosion repair project, but unfortunately everything from weather conditions to ease-of-access, and the severity of your erosion will determine how long it takes us to complete your project.
A typical single lot revetment can be completed in 1-2 weeks from the start of construction to completion, but your project could vary significantly depending on your unique conditions. We can provide a more accurate timeframe at your site assessment.
Will Installing a Revetment Damage my Yard?
We can’t speak for all companies on this point, but at Mark Haynes Construction we use specially-designed mats to protect your lawn and underground utilities.
We drive our specialized earth moving equipment on these mats to guarantee minimal damage to your property.
Do I Need Engineering or a Permit?
ODNR has a simple permitting process that we can partner with you to apply for. If your project requires engineering or additional permitting, we offer referrals in your area.
How Much Does a Revetment Cost?
No two revetments are the same, making it impossible to give an accurate price. Here are the factors most likely to affect your final cost:
- Amount of Materials – How much square footage of shoreline needs attention?
- Existing Conditions – How severe is your erosion?
- Access – Is your shoreline difficult to access? Will we need to access from a neighboring property?
When possible, we recommend maximizing your savings by partnering with adjoining landowners for your erosion control project.
Why a Revetment and Not a Breakwall?
We offer both revetment and breakwall construction. However, many people choose to hire us for revetment construction because of the time it takes to get a permit.
A breakwall permit can take up to 2-3 years and is issued by The Army Corps of Engineers. Two to three years can make all the difference in erosion damage, causing you to lose as much as several feet from your property line depending on the area you live.
Revetment permits are available through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and can be obtained in 1-2 weeks. For our customers who are concerned about property damage and rapid erosion, this time frame is much more suitable.
If you are interested in breakwall construction but are concerned about the time it takes to get a permit, you might consider having a revetment installed as a short-term erosion control plan while your breakwall permit is processed.
Is Lake Erie Erosion Getting Worse?
In recent years, Lake Erie water levels have risen to record levels, rising as much as 30” above normal in 2019.
High water levels, coupled with severe weather, ice movement, strong winds and more have accelerated erosion damage along the fragile Lake Erie shoreline.
In some areas along Ohio’s northern coast, property owners have lost up to 100 ft of shoreline property.
